The Interview

If you’re on the fence about seeing this one — maybe unsure about Hugo Weaving’s calibre — stop reading right now, run down to the local video shop (or library, as I did) and rent (or borrow) it.

From here on out, I’ll assume that you: a) have seen The Interview, b) aren’t susceptible to having movies spoiled (as I certainly am), or c) can’t be bothered to stop reading, don’t follow instruction well, think I’m full of crap, etc.

The score was absolutely fantastic.  I think it’s fair to say I’m a fan of David Hirschfelder now, having enjoyed his work on Shine for many years.  The music in The Interview is haunting, and yet at times so inconspicuous that it barely disturbs the beautiful use of silence.

Weaving’s performance brought to mind the best of Kevin Spacey in both Seven and The Usual Suspects; it really was that good, in my mind, and entirely unexpected.  Add to that a superb supporting cast, all of whom held up so well under the repeated tights shots throughout, and you really have a winner.

At times I thought the distortions of the frame and the flashbacks were a bit heavy-handed, but, certainly in the case of the latter anyway, it just had you questioning all the more what was real versus imagined.
